Vffs Packaging Application
A global leader in automatic packaging machinery and a reference player in VFFS applications required a belt solution able to guarantee stable performance across different film types (including polyethylene (PE), polypropylene (PP) or paper-based materials with, matt and glossy surfaces), machine speeds, and environmental conditions: humid or temperature-variable with frequent start-and-stop cycles. The belt solution previously adopted by the customer used a traditional NR coating, which showed limitations in terms of durability, grip consistency, and longterm performance stability under demanding operating conditions.

The company specializes in the production of machines for filling and capping glass containers using twist-off caps, handling liquid, semi-liquid, and pasty products. The machine featured in this case study is designed to close jars and bottles with metal caps. It uses two different belt systems working together to ensure efficient and reliable capping across a wide range of container formats. Two V-belts are positioned on either side of the container to rotate it during forward movement, while a pair of flat belts is placed above the jar and cap. These flat belts operate at different speeds, allowing the cap to rotate and screw onto the container with precision.

Bookbinding is the process of physically assembling a book from a stack of paper sheets. It consists of many operations such as cutting, folding, and gluing. A book might need dozens of operations to complete, according to the specific style and materials. Books bound by traditional methods often do not stay open by themselves due to the structure of the paper. To avoid this, pages are “double folded”. The paper structure is “broken” on two lines and permits the book to stay open. Even though double folding is a simple innovation it requires high precision and pages need to be accurately gripped as they go through the folding process. A manufacturer of bookbinding equipment contacted Megadyne requesting a drive design for a new paper folding machine because previous designs did not always fold the paper correctly. See more and discover how Megadyne sorted out the problem.

The Tobacco Industry faces ever-increasing rules and regulations regarding the compatibility of materials that are permitted to come into contact with tobacco products. The list of banned materials increases day by day and is a major consideration in the design of tobacco packaging machinery. Tobacco packaging machinery is required to be precise and operate at high speeds while assuring that the components used in the process adhere to the regulatory guidelines. Tobacco producers must comply with these regulations while continuing to increase productivity and produce a wide variety of products while maintaining production flexibility and the ability to make rapid adjustments to production machinery. A manufacturer contacted Megadyne requesting design advice for their conveyor drive on a cigarette packaging machine. The engineering team suggested endless polyurethane Megaflex belts with FDA compound and False Teeth System, to address the need for conveying different types and sizes of packages. Read here all the details of this case.

A Pelletizer manufacturer contacted Megadyne regarding issues with their two-stage drive. While some slippage was desirable to absorb frequent peak shock loads on the first stage of the drive, the standard raw edge rubber V-belts used did not last very long on this demanding drive. The slippage caused by the frequent peak loads generated excessive heat, reducing the belt life to unacceptable levels. Discover how you can do the same for your drive!

The Application Engineering Team at Megadyne collaborated with a manufacturer of portable sawmills to design a drive capable of increasing production capacity in terms of cutting quality and speed. The belt drive would be required to deliver high-precision positioning at high linear speed. As the units are normally located outdoors it would require the drive to work at very low winter as well as high summer temperatures. Continue reading to learn the solution proposed by Megadyne.

A machine tool manufacturer experienced problems with a belt-driven linear actuator on a CNC machine. The synchronous belts from a competitor suffered from elongation and did not deliver the necessary, highly accurate positioning that is essential in machining operations. They required frequent tensioning and were also susceptible to breakage due to shock loading. The application required a high degree of reliability and repeatability over extended periods with high acceleration and high thrust demands. A low-maintenance, cost-effective, lightweight, quiet and efficient system was desired. The belts from a competitor were not delivering acceptable performance. Discover which type of belt is the ultimate choice for the manufacturer and why.
